a crime were better than any quick decision.

Benting`s story
Though an advertisement in "The times", Benting was employed by Van Lutjens to watch over his two precious earrings from Southampton to New York on a ship. Lutjens was greatly fascinated by his two precious stones and could not part with them. He spent many hours admiring them. On a rough sea, by the side of the ship, Lutjens used to open the case containing the two precious earrings. But, one day, before he could open the lock to look at his diamonds, the ship rolled suddenly and violently. Van Lutjens was nearly thrown over into the sea. He managed to seize the top of iron railing, but dropped the black box which contained the two precious stones and it fell into the sea.
Taking a quick decision
As soon as Benting had seen the box fall into the sea, he threw the table and two chairs into the sea. This would show them where to look for the sunken case. Then he persuaded the captain to stop the ship and go back where the earrings had been lost.
